Yet, it was not specified what exactly was wrong with him.
Wangusi’s time as head of the Communication Authority, which began on August 21, 2012, ended in August of 2019.
He served in an interim capacity for a year before being officially named CA head of the company.
The CA Board voted to extend his contract in 2015, and he remained in his role until 2017.
Mercy Wanjau, who was previously the Director of Legal Services and Board Secretary at the Authority, took over for Wangusi in an interim capacity.
Nonetheless, Wangusi’s departure was quite dramatic, as he refused to step down after being replaced by Wanjau.
Thus, CS and ICT Joe Mucheru apparently had an argument with the late CA, who told him that, by government laws, he was had to retire.
Wangusi told a local radio station that he would not be stepping down when his replacement was appointed.
I heard the story on the media and I found it even tough to make her lead a department, so I can only imagine how hard it is for them to bring in the most junior individual.
Wanjau has worked as a commercial lawyer and a regulatory and governance specialist with KPMG South Africa, PwC Kenya, and the United Nations International Telecommunications Union.
As of the 21st of August, 2019, Wangusi had completed his second and last four-year tenure as DG.
After a series of boardroom conflicts and failed efforts to remove him as the regulator’s head, he still hadn’t handed over four months later.
As he refused Mucheru’s request to assist law enforcement in their fight against cybercrime, he and his boss had a falling out.
The government intended to use the cash-rich agency’s around Sh23 billion sitting in multiple bank accounts, and this was the source of the dispute.
He was eventually placed on involuntary leave, but he fought back in court and eventually settled out of court with CA.
When California lost a series of court fights to have him removed from office, a compromise allowed him to finish out his tenure.
Wangusi has more than 20 years of experience working in the fields of information technology, communications technology, and technology in general.
He began his career with the CA in 2000 as an assistant director, and after working his way up through the ranks, he was promoted to the post of ultimate supervisor in 2012.
In addition to that, he was a senior lecturer at what was then known as the Kenya College for Communications Technology (KCCT) and is now called the Multimedia University of Kenya.
After Wangusi’s contested departure from the Communications Authority of Kenya, the then-Director of Legal Services Mercy Wanjau, who is now Secretary to the Cabinet, was appointed the Director-General in acting capacity. This caused his final days at work at the Communications Authority of Kenya to be marred by boardroom wrangling.
He passed away on Wednesday afternoon in the Nairobi Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for some time prior to his passing.
Towards the end of January, a call went out to the general public asking for donations of blood.
