Jubilation as FG Pays N77,000 Allowance to NYSC Members for the First Time

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially commenced the payment of the newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, leading to widespread excitement and celebration across the country.

NYSC Members Receive Increased Allowance

This development comes after months of anticipation following the government’s approval of a salary increase for corps members. The new allowance, which more than doubles the previous ₦33,000 stipend, was initially announced in late 2024 as part of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act. However, its implementation faced delays due to budgetary considerations.

The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, had earlier assured corps members that the new allowance would take effect in March 2025, a promise that has now been fulfilled. Many corps members have already started receiving alerts confirming the new payment, sparking joy and celebration among beneficiaries.

Backlog Payments to Be Addressed

In addition to the payment of the new allowance, the Federal Government has pledged to settle any backlog for corps members who were in service when the increment was first announced. According to the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, while the backlog may not be cleared immediately, plans are in place to ensure that all eligible corps members receive their outstanding payments.

“We understand the concerns of corps members who have been eagerly waiting for this increment. The government is working tirelessly to ensure that all necessary payments are made as soon as possible,” Olawande stated.

Reactions from Corps Members

Many corps members have taken to social media to express their excitement and gratitude. Some shared screenshots of their credit alerts, while others applauded the government for finally implementing the long-awaited increment.

A corps member serving in Lagos, identified as Chiamaka, said, “This is a huge relief! The increased allowance will definitely help us cope with the high cost of living.”

Another corps member in Kano, Ibrahim, added, “We have been waiting for this moment. Now we can afford to take care of ourselves better during our service year.”

Implications of the New Allowance

The increment in the NYSC allowance is expected to have a positive impact on corps members’ welfare, improving their financial stability during their one-year service. It is also seen as a step towards aligning government wages with the rising cost of living in Nigeria.

While corps members celebrate this development, some analysts believe the government should also focus on broader youth empowerment programs and job opportunities to ensure long-term financial independence for Nigerian graduates.

Conclusion

The payment of the ₦77,000 allowance marks a significant milestone for NYSC members and serves as a morale booster for future corps members. With the government’s promise to clear outstanding payments, expectations remain high for continued improvements in youth welfare and employment opportunities in Nigeria.
