Liverpool can reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since winning the trophy in 2019 when they host a Benfica team who last made it to the final four of Europe’s top club competition 32 years ago.

Two-time continental champions Benfica haven’t been back to the European Cup semi-finals since beating Marseille at that stage in the 1989/90 season. As Águias then lost to AC Milan in the final, and haven’t won the competition since 1962.

Liverpool, who are bidding for a seventh European title, take a commanding lead into Wednesday’s quarter-final second leg. Goals by Ibrahima Konaté, Sadio Mané and Luis Díaz gave the Reds a 3-1 win in last week’s opening leg at the Estádio da Luz, Darwin Núñez replying for Benfica.

The winners of this tie will face Villarreal in the semi-finals, after the Spaniards sealed a surprise quarter-final triumph over Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
